"When Horses Die" by Velimir Khlebnikov
When horses die, they breathe
When grasses die, they wither,
When suns die, they go out,
When people die, they sing songs.
When grasses die, they wither,
When suns die, they go out,
When people die, they sing songs.
Analysis
"When Horses Die" is a poem about coping mechanisms for all different species. Basically explaining that
everything and everyone reacts different to death. People particularly sing songs when loved ones die, because we like to call funerals a "Homegoing service" They are going home to be with their God and it is suppose to be a joyous occasion although it is under sorrowful circumstances. "When horses die, they breathe" meaning that they are at ease when they die. Most horses are used for riding, so when they die they relax. "When grasses die, they wither" although grass dying is a physical change and will come back, it dies. When it dies, the grass will never be the same. "When suns die, they go out" Scientifically, that's true. But no one really knows what the sun will do when it goes our until it really happens.
